Abstract

For decades, free trade was advocated as the vehicle for peace, prosperity, and democracy in an increasingly globalized market. More recently, the proliferation of foreign direct investment has raised questions about its impact upon local economies and politics. Here, seven scholars bring together their wide-ranging expertise to investigate the factors that determine the attractiveness of a locale to investors and the extent of their political power. Multinational corporations prefer to invest where legal and political institutions support the rule of law, protections for property rights, and democratic processes. Corporate influence on local institutions, in turn, depends upon the relative power of other players and the types of policies at issue.

Abstract

"This book, produced by a unique team of business experts and UN agencies, is designed to fill a critical void-between the support of more than 1,000 organisations for the globally recognised Principles of the United Nations Global Compact and the need for this support to be translated into the day-to-day running of business to create value and improve performance. The ten Global Compact Principles cover human rights, labour standards, environmental responsibility and anti-corruption. But what does it mean to implement the Compact and its principles? How can the broad brush strokes of the Principles form the basis of management change? And how should companies establish benchmarks and performance indicators for implementation? For many companies, the journey is just starting. How can they ensure that they align with the Global Compact in ways that continue to reward their other business objectives? How should they embrace and capitalise on the Global Compact's potential for bringing together business, the public sector, trade unions and civil society in new partnerships? The aim of this book is to answer these questions by providing a performance model clearly grounded on the total quality management approach to assist businesses in putting the Global Compact into practice. Raising the Bar collects together and categorises a wealth of corporate responsibility tools, good practice and case studies in a structure familiar to anyone aware of business excellence models and demonstrates that values create value-leadership commitment to the Global Compact can impact both the boardroom and the shop floor, public image and balance sheet. Full of graphics and designed with accessibility in mind, the book will be a goldmine for managers looking for inspiration on how their businesses can be good corporate citizens and real proof that good business is also good for the bottom line."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Contributors to the book suggest an alternative discourse and value system to that of the market-led corporate global agenda, one that does not directly challenge corporate globalization but recognizes a parallel reality. Need and ingenuity are creating a culture that is clearly different from both North American pop culture and the high culture of the intellectual elites, and which can lead the world away from an "economics of death" to a more positive world. The New World Order does not, however, encourage naive optimism, as it recognizes that the lethal inversion of our value system, which is only beginning to be recognized, may not be acknowledged and counteracted in time to prevent disaster. Contributors include Meenakshi Bharat (University of New Delhi), James Bisset (former Canadian ambassador to Yugoslavia), Leigh S. Brownhill (OISE, University of Toronto), Keith Ellis (University of Toronto), María Figueredo (University of Toronto), Michael Mandel (Osgoode Hall Law School), John McMurtry (University of Guelph), J. Nef (University of Guelph), Jennifer Sumner (University of Guelph), Terisa E. Turner (University of Guelph), Edward Vargo (the Assumption University in Bangkok), and Gordana Yovanovich.

Abstract

Carlo Manuel Drauth explores under which conditions multinational enterprises systematically manage their human rights impacts with a view to preventing corporate human rights violations across their operations. Using a multi-method research design and focusing on the 30 largest German firms, the author finds that it is neither institutional forces (e.g., standards or norms) nor stakeholder pressures (e.g., from NGOs or trade unions) alone, but their combined effect that leads to a systematic human rights management at the firm-level. This finding informs a new theoretical approach to the study of CSR, integrating institutional and stakeholder theories while taking an explicit value chain perspective.
